Odie Mae Johnson

January 3, 1947 - November 20, 2006

Biography

Mrs. Odie Mae Lundy Johnson, our beautiful loving, caring and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was called into the open hands of our Almighty Father, to be with him and all the angels in heaven, on the morning of November 20, 2006 at her home in Biloxi, MS at the age of 59.

Mrs. Odie Mae Johnson was born to the late Laura and Jeff Lundy. Ms. Johnson was a lifelong resident of Biloxi. She graduated from Nichols High School where she played in the band in the percussion section. She was employed at Biloxi Regional Hospital in the surgical department as an operating room technician. She was also employed at Moore's Community Home for several years as a pre-school teacher.

Mrs. Johnson was a lifelong member of Greater St. John A.M.E. Church, where she served as a member of the Stewardess Board, and a member of the Missionary Society. In her early years, she was Director of the Young People's Department, and a Sunday School teacher. She was a faithful member of St. John until her illness prevented her from performing her services. Our mother was a very Christian woman, who was truely dedicated to the Lord.

Ms. Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, Laura and Jeff Lundy; and three brothers, Ivery Thomas, Eddie Lee Thomas and Roville Thomas.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her husband and soul mate of 36 years, James Weldon Johnson, Sr.; her three beautiful children: Laura Smith of Biloxi, Tyrone Johnson of Scotland, and James (Charlotte) Johnson, Jr. of Biloxi; nine grandchildren: Latrice (William) Parnell, Antonio Smith, Ariana Johnson, Terrance Ratliff, Jasmine Johnson, Diamond Legier, Erik Legier, T. J. Johnson and Salena Johnson; two great-grandchildren: Qua'Darius Parnell and JonTavis North. She also leaves to mourn her memory three sisters and partners in prayer: Edith (Edward) Robinson of Biloxi, Eretta (Rev. Willie Jenkins) Jenkins of Biloxi, Patricia (Henry) Beaton of Gulfport; three brothers: David (Jean) Thomas of Biloxi, Jimmy (Ly'Nell) Lundy of Biloxi and Randy (Deborah) Lundy of Biloxi; and Jeffrey Lundy whom she raised as a son. Ms. Johnson also leaves to mourn in her memory long time dedicated friends, Frank Brown, Diane (Dave) Straight, Beatrice Mossett, Fannie Williams, Carolyn Youngblood, Sandra Vincent, Tammy Briggs, Alvin Murray, Ruby Ratliff, Eva Spears, Jauna Ratliff, Johndric North, and Tammy Briggs. In addition, Ms. Johnson also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and wonderful friends. Our mother is resting now, after so many years of suffering. Her laughter, smiles, kindness, and devotion will never be forgotten.

Rev. Andrew J. Simms is pastor of St. John AME Church, where her services will be held. Rev. Cornelius Hilliard, Jr., pastor of Turner Chapel AME Church in Crystal Springs will bring the scripture readings. Rev. Clarence Thomas, associate minister of St. John, will provide words of comfort to the family and friends. Her friend, Rev. James W. Palmer, pastor of Greater Greene Chapel AME Church in Baton Rouge, will deliver her eulogy.
